Detail

A roller chain is a power-transmitting mechanism of interlinked metal links with rollers between plates, meshing with sprockets. It transfers rotational motion via rolling contact to minimize friction, ideal for heavy-duty applications like motorcycles and industrial conveyors.  Connecting links in roller chains are detachable components that join chain ends, enabling assembly/disassembly, typically with pins or clips for secure engagement.

Materials:

  • Carbon steel: Most common material, offering good strength and wear resistance at low cost. High-strength carbon steel (e.g., C1045, C10B21) for general industrial use, offering durability and wear resistance.
  • Stainless steel: Contains chromium and sometimes nickel. Corrosion-resistant (304, 316) for food processing, marine, or wet environments, maintaining strength in harsh conditions.

Connecting Links:

  • Link: Link contour size and shape optimization. Tensile & fatigue strength Apertures Shaved.
  • Pin: Alloy steels Controlled case hardening. Optimum wear, strength, and fatigue strength.
  • Cotter Pin: Uses a removable clip to secure the link. Fixed with a cotter pin through the pin end, ideal for high-tension/high-impact applications.
  • Offset Links:Repair chains with damaged sections. Connects odd-numbered chain links; forms a “half link” with offset plates.
  • Spring Clip: Integrates with lubricated O-ring chains. Easy to install/remove; secured by a spring clip for reliable retention.

Key Features:

  • High Strength: Can withstand high tensile loads.
  • Durability:High quality materials and proper heat treatment processes give chains good wear resistance, allowing them to maintain performance over long periods.
  • Flexibility:Chains can bend around sprockets smoothly, facilitating power transmission in various mechanical setups.
  • Low Friction:Smooth operation with minimal energy loss.
  • Corrosion Resistance:Stainless steel chains resist corrosion, enabling them to function well in corrosive environments.
  • Temperature Resistance: Performs well in moderate temperatures; heat-treated alloys extend use in high-temperature settings.

Simple Structure:

Easy to install, easy to assemble and disassemble. Some chains can be assembled relatively easily, especially in simpler applications, more complex and heavy – duty chain assembly tasks can be quite challenging and require specialized skills and equipment.

Application Scope:

Roller chains are widely used in industrial machinery like conveyors and assembly lines, automotive/motorcycle engines and drives, material handling equipment such as elevators, agricultural tractors, mining crushers, and food processing lines for durable power transmission.
