Gear is a mechanical component that transmit rotation and power from one shaft to another, if each shaft possesses appropriately shaped projections (teeth) equally spaced around its circumference such that as it rotates, the successive tooth goes into the space between the teeth of the other shaft.

 

Various Gear Types Available:

  • Spur gear: Straight teeth parallel to the gear axis. Simple, cost-effective. And High efficiency (~98%).
  • Helical gear:Teeth cut at an angle (helix) to the axis. Smooth, quiet operation
  • Bevel gear:Conical shape for intersecting shafts.Simpler but noisy. And curved teeth for smoother motion.
  • Worm gear: a type of staggered shaft gear that facilitates motion between shafts by utilizing threads cut into a cylindrical bar, allowing for speed reduction.
  • Rack and pinion:One of the oldest and simplest mechanisms used for converting rotary motion into linear motion.

 

Materials:

  • Steel:Steel: Common for its strength and durability.
  • Stainless steel: Ideal for applications where corrosion resistance is essential, such as in food processing.

  • Bronze:Offers good wear resistance and corrosion resistance, suitable for marine applications.

Heat Treatments:

  • Quenching & Tempering: Improves overall hardness (e.g., HRC 28-35) and strength, suitable for medium-load gears (e.g., 45# steel gears in general machinery).
  • Nitriding: Creates a hard, wear-resistant layer (HRC 65-70) with minimal distortion, suitable for precision gears (e.g., aerospace components) or corrosion-resistant needs.
  • Induction Hardening:  Hardens the surface layer (depth ~2-5mm) efficiently, ideal for large gears (e.g., wind turbine gears) to balance cost and durability.

 

Surface Treatments:

  • Plating (e.g., Zinc, Nickel, Chrome): Protect against rust (zinc plating on outdoor gears) or enhance surface hardness (hard chrome plating for sliding gears).
  • Black Oxide Coating: Provides mild corrosion resistance and reduces light reflection (suitable for optical equipment gears).
  • Phosphating: Improves lubricant retention and anti-corrosion, often used as a pre-treatment for painted gears.
